Title: The Fear of the Lord- Pt. 3- “The Day of Accountability For the Believer”

Text: Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corinthians 5:10-11; I Cor. 3: 10-15

INTRODUCTION: The day of accountability is the day in which every person will answer to God for his/her life. Every person saved or unsaved will stand before God and respond to Him. In this message, we will look at the day of accountability for the believer in Jesus Christ.

  1. THE DAY OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE BELIEVER IS UNAVOIDABLE/INEVITABLE [Romans 14: 10-12].
      1. The certainty of this event is declared in Scripture [Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corinthians 5: 10 = notice the word must which means every believer will be required to appear at this judgment.
      2. The certainty of this event is declared by the Savior [Romans 14: 11]-For it is written, As I live saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. [Isaiah 45:23] -I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
  2. THE DAY OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE BELIEVER WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST [Romans 14:10; 2 Corinthians 5:10]
      1. The judgment seat or “bema” seat of Christ is the place where every Christian will stand before Jesus.
      2. The word bema appears in classical Greek to identify the judge’s seat in the arena of the Olympic games. The bema was the seat whereon the judge sat to judge the contestants.
      3. Jesus will sit on the throne and be the judge. Why?
          1. For the Father has placed all judgment into His hands. John 5:22- For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. In Acts 17:31, Paul spoke to the Athenians and said, “Because he (God) hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
  3. THE DAY OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE BELIEVER WILL HAVE A TWO-FOLD PURPOSE
      1. First, according to Romans 14:10-12 and 2 Corinthians 5:10, believers will "give an account" of themselves to God.
          1. What kind of account will we have to give? According to 1 Corinthians 3:10-13, believers will be judged based on what they have built upon the spiritual foundation of their life which is Jesus Christ.
          2. There will be a manifestation of our works. Notice the word “work” is used four times in this text. Christ will review, scrutinize and evaluate everything believers have done in their bodies from the time they were saved until the time they die. Every thought, word, motive, and deed will be tried with fire (v. 13). This judgment will be based on the quality of those works.
                1. Some works will have the quality of gold, silver, and precious stones.
                2. Some works will be like wood, hay, and stubble. The fiery scrutiny will reveal the quality.
      2. A second purpose for the Judgment Seat of Christ is to determine if one’s works deserve reward or loss of reward (v. 14-15)
          1. Some believers will receive a reward. A reward is a thing given in recognition of one's service, effort, or achievement.
          2. Some believers will suffer loss. That is, they will see the loss of their labor, yet be saved being snatched from the fire (v. 15)
