Text: Revelation 20: 11-15

  1. WHERE WILL THIS JUDGMENT TAKE PLACE? (v.11) “at the great white throne”
      1. Throne = from the root word “thrao.” The phonetic pronunciation is “thron-os” (to sit); a stately seat (“throne”); by implication power or a potentate :
          1. God’s throne is a place of sovereignty and holiness.
          2. God’s throne is the place from which God rules
      2. The throne is great -big (literal or figurative, in a very wide application) :- (+ fear) exceedingly, great (-est), high, large, loud, mighty, + (be) sore (afraid),
          1. It is great because God is great and he sits on His throne.
          2. It is great because Jesus is at the right hand of God on the throne as well. I Peter 3:22 - Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
      3. The throne is a great white throne - White speaks of God’s perfection, holiness and righteousness.
  2. WHO WILL BE THE JUDGE? (v. 11b) “and him that sat on it (v. 12a) “God.” A deity. Supreme Divinity.
      1. According to scripture Jesus will be the judge. [Mt. 28:18]- “All power is given to me in heaven and in earth.” John 5:22 - For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. (v.27) “And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
      2. Jesus won sovereignty over all peoples and things (Phil. 2; 5-11)
  3. WHO WILL BE JUDGED? [vv. 12-13]
      1. The dead (v.12) I believe the word dead refers to the spiritually dead. Why?
          1. In Ephesians 2: 1, Paul wrote to the believers at Ephesus and said, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.
          2. These spiritually dead souls are resurrected from hell (v. 13).
      2. The dead will be the small and the great (v. 12) The small and the great refer to the ordinary/average people and the people who made a name for themselves.
  4. WHAT WILL BE THE BASIS FOR THE JUDGMENT? [vv. 12-13]
      1. The books (v. 12). Books = These books are the record books of all the works of unbelievers. The books have all the facts needed to make an exact and fair judgment. (Ps. 62: 12)- Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.
      2. The book of life. This book belongs to Jesus. It contains the name of every person who has received eternal life through faith in Christ. (Phil. 4:3 - And I entreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow-laborers, whose names are in the book of life. Rev. 13: 8-9- And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear.
  5. WHAT WILL BE THE OUTCOME OF THE JUDGMENT? (vv. 14-15)
      1. Death and hell will be cast into the lake of fire.
      2. Every soul whose name was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
